What Is a BRSTN Code in the Philippines?
BRSTN stands for Bank Routing Symbol and Transit Number. It is a 9-digit code assigned by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to identify a specific bank branch within the Philippine domestic clearing system. Every BSP-registered bank has one, and it is what gets used when you transfer money between Philippine banks using PESONet (batch transfer) or InstaPay (real-time transfer).
The structure is straightforward. The first four digits are the bank code, which identifies the institution. For BDO, that is 0103. For BPI, it is 0100. For Metrobank, 0102. The remaining five digits identify the specific branch or processing centre. So 010300001 is a BDO code (0103) pointing to a specific BDO branch (00001 = main processing hub).
For most everyday transfers between Philippine bank accounts, you only need the BRSTN and the recipient's account number. Your online banking app or the InstaPay portal will look up the bank name automatically from the BRSTN prefix.
BRSTN vs SWIFT: Which One Do You Need?
This is the question that trips up most OFW families. The short answer: BRSTN is for transfers that stay inside the Philippines. SWIFT is for money coming in from outside the country.
If your relative in the US, UAE, or Saudi Arabia is sending money directly to your bank account, they need to enter your bank's SWIFT code. For BDO it is BNORPHMM. For BPI it is BOPIPHMM. For Metrobank it is MBTCPHMM. Your BRSTN code is not relevant to them at all and would not be recognised by their international bank.
Services like Remitly, Wise, and Western Union work differently. They maintain local accounts in both countries and handle the routing themselves. When you use Remitly to send money to a BDO account, you just enter the BDO account number and Remitly pushes the money from their local Philippine account using PESONet or InstaPay. The sender does not need to know the BRSTN at all.
GCash and Maya: How They Work for Remittances
GCash and Maya are the two biggest digital wallets in the Philippines and they are extremely popular for receiving OFW remittances. Both operate as e-money issuers licensed by the BSP, and both have BRSTN codes that allow other Philippine banks to send money to them via InstaPay.
To send to a GCash wallet from another Philippine bank, the bank code is 011501011 and the account number is the recipient's registered GCash mobile number (11 digits, starting with 09). For Maya, the bank code is 010430001. Both support InstaPay which means money arrives in real time.
For receiving from abroad into GCash, the service has a GCash Padala feature and several partner remittance services that can credit directly to a GCash wallet. The family member abroad does not need the BRSTN for this route. They just use the remittance partner app and choose GCash as the delivery method.
