OPay, Kuda, PalmPay, Moniepoint: Why They Have No SWIFT Codes
The most common question from Nigerians in the diaspora.
Why they have no SWIFT codes
OPay, Kuda, PalmPay, Moniepoint, Carbon, FairMoney are licensed as Microfinance Banks (MFBs) by the CBN, not as commercial banks.
MFBs are not participants in the SWIFT network. They cannot receive international wire transfers directly.
Their accounts are valid for domestic NIP transfers within Nigeria only.
Alternatives for receiving international money
Option 1: Open a commercial bank account (GTBank, Access, Zenith, UBA, First Bank) and receive SWIFT wires directly.
Option 2: Use Grey or Leatherback for virtual USD/GBP/EUR accounts that convert to NGN via NIP.
Option 3: Ask the sender to use Wise, Remitly, or WorldRemit which deliver directly to Nigerian bank accounts.
What Is a SWIFT Code and Why Do You Need One for Nigerian Banks?
A SWIFT code (also called a BIC or Bank Identifier Code) is an international standard that identifies a specific bank in the global wire transfer network operated by SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication). When someone outside Nigeria wants to send money to a Nigerian bank account via wire transfer, they need the recipient bank's SWIFT code to route the payment correctly. Without it, the sender's bank cannot determine which institution to send the funds to.
Nigerian bank SWIFT codes follow a consistent format. Most end in NGLA, where NG is Nigeria's country code and LA refers to Lagos as Nigeria's financial centre. GTBank's SWIFT code GTBINGLA breaks down as: GTB (GTBank identifier) + I (institution code) + NG (Nigeria) + LA (Lagos). First Bank's code FBNINGLA is: FBN (First Bank Nigeria) + I + NG + LA. This NGLA suffix pattern makes Nigerian SWIFT codes easy to recognise.
How to Receive International Transfers into a Nigerian Account
To receive a SWIFT wire transfer into a Nigerian commercial bank account, give the sender four things: your 10-digit NUBAN account number, your bank's name, your bank's SWIFT code (use the finder above), and your bank's address. Some banks also require your full name exactly as registered on the account. The address for GTBank Victoria Island is 635 Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. For Zenith Bank: Plot 84 Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. For Access Bank: Plot 999c Danmole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The cheaper and faster route for the Nigerian diaspora is using a dedicated remittance service. Grey, Wise, Remitly, and WorldRemit all deliver directly to Nigerian bank accounts without requiring the sender to provide a SWIFT code or bank address. The sender just enters your account number and bank name, and the service handles the routing. Grey specifically is designed for Nigerians abroad who want virtual USD/GBP/EUR accounts linked to their NGN bank accounts.
Heritage Bank: What Happened and What to Do
On 3 June 2024, the Central Bank of Nigeria revoked Heritage Bank's banking licence, citing the bank's breach of Section 12 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020. The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) was appointed as liquidator. Heritage Bank ceased all operations on that date. The bank's SWIFT code HBCLNGLA is no longer active.
Former Heritage Bank customers with deposits up to N5 million are covered by NDIC insurance. To file a claim or check your status, visit ndic.gov.ng. Do not attempt to receive any international transfers to former Heritage Bank account numbers as these accounts are no longer active and funds may be lost or significantly delayed in recovery.
