How This Number Is Worked Out
$1 is multiplied by two different rates. The parallel market average is the average of quotes published on publicly available Nigerian rate-tracking websites, shown only when at least two quotes from at least two different websites are available; the buy and sell figures are the lowest and highest of those quotes. The official reference rate comes from Open Exchange Rates, an interbank data provider, not from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Both are indicative references, not quotes from any bank or dealer.
Why the Two Rates Differ
The official reference is an interbank figure. The parallel market rate reflects what Nigerian rate-tracking websites are publishing for cash and informal transfers, which is usually higher. The gap between them is often called the premium, and it changes from day to day. Neither rate is what a specific bank, bureau de change or transfer provider will actually give you: ask them for their rate before you send or receive money.
What This Amount Means in Practice
$1 is too small for most bureaux de change or parallel-market traders to exchange in person: it mainly serves as a reference point, to work out what a larger amount is worth by multiplying up, or to check a quote you have already been given. For an amount you actually plan to send or spend, use the amount box above or the converter.
This is a summary of published reports on the Central Bank of Nigeria's 2026 Foreign Exchange Manual (effective 1 June 2026), not the full text of the manual, and rules can change. Confirm the current requirement with your bank before you travel or send money.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is $1 in naira today?
At today’s parallel market average, $1 is about ₦1,383.76. At the official reference rate, it is ₦1,325.46. Both are indicative references, not a quote from any bank or dealer. Data collected 24 September 2026, 05:54 UTC.
What is the difference between the official and parallel rate?
The official reference rate is an interbank figure from Open Exchange Rates. The parallel market rate is the average of quotes published on Nigerian rate-tracking websites, and it is usually higher. Neither is guaranteed, and a bank or bureau de change may quote something different again.
Is this a live rate?
The parallel market figure updates hourly and shows exactly when it was last collected. It is not real-time, and the actual rate you are offered can change between collections.
Does this page exchange money or arrange a transfer?
No. This page only converts an amount using published reference rates. It does not hold funds, arrange transactions or recommend any provider. See the disclaimer.
Why does the amount shown here differ from what my bank or a trader quoted me?
Providers set their own rates from their costs, location, the size of the transaction and whether you pay in cash or by transfer. The figures here are references, not offers, so a real quote can be higher or lower.
Can I check a different amount?
Yes. Type any amount into the box above the calculator, or use one of the quick amounts. Each is also its own page: $1, $5, $10, $20, $25, $50, $100, $150, $200, $500, $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000.
Can I actually exchange $1 with a dealer?
Most bureaux de change and parallel-market traders have a practical minimum, and it is usually well above $1. This page is best used as a quick rate check or as a building block for a larger amount, not to exchange this exact sum.
