Lost Your Phone? Block USSD Banking

These four banks publish a code that shuts off USSD access or debits if your phone is lost or stolen. Do this first, then contact your bank.

Codes to block USSD banking or debits, by bank
BankCodeWhat the bank says it does
Access Bank*901*911#Deactivates your USSD profile if your phone is lost or stolen. It can be dialled from another phone number. Source
FCMB*329*911#Blocks your USSD profile or your bank account. Source
Stanbic IBTC Bank*909*1*911#Blocks your account if your phone is stolen or damaged. Source
Zenith Bank*966*911#Stops all debit transactions on your account. It can be dialled from any mobile phone. Source
For other banks: we did not find a published block code on their pages. Call the number on the back of your card, use your bank's app from another device, or visit a branch.

Bank Mergers and Your USSD Code

Two mergers affect this list. Union Bank of Nigeria and Titan Trust Bank completed their merger on 1 September 2025 and trade as Union Bank of Nigeria. Providus Bank and Unity Bank completed a merger in 2026 and operate as ProvidusUnity Bank (Premium Times report).

The Unity Bank code on this page comes from Unity Bank's own announcement. We could not find a new code list from ProvidusUnity, so if *7799# does not respond, ask the bank which code applies to your account.

Banks We Could Not Confirm

We only publish a code we have seen on the bank's own page, post or announcement. For these banks we could not, and the codes that appear on other websites disagree or are not sourced, so we do not list them:

  • Globus Bank
  • Optimus Bank
  • PremiumTrust Bank
  • Providus Bank (the code used before the ProvidusUnity merger)

Heritage Bank: the Central Bank of Nigeria revoked its licence in 2024 (Channels TV report), so we do not list a code for it, even though older lists still do.

If you know an official source for any of these, or you find a code here that has stopped working, tell us on the contact page and include the link.

What USSD Banking Is

USSD banking lets you use basic bank services by dialling a short code that starts with an asterisk and ends with a hash, such as *737#. You then follow the menu on your screen. It runs over your mobile network's signalling channel, not the internet, so it works on any phone, including basic handsets, as long as you have a network signal.

Banks describe what it can do in similar terms: check a balance, transfer money, buy airtime or data, pay bills and, at several banks, open an account or withdraw cash without a card. Which of these you can do, and the limits that apply, differ by bank and are set in each bank's own terms.

How to Use a USSD Code

  1. Dial the code from the phone number registered with your bank. Several banks, including GTBank, Access Bank, Wema Bank and Keystone Bank, say the service works only from that number.
  2. If it is your first time, register when the menu asks. Registration usually means confirming details linked to your account and setting a PIN.
  3. Pick an option from the menu, or use a shortcut. A shortcut puts your choice into the code itself. For example, GTBank publishes *737*6*1# for a balance check.
  4. Check the amount and the beneficiary name shown before you confirm any transfer.

Each card above has a "Popular shortcuts" list where the bank publishes them. Replace the words Amount and AccountNumber with your own figures.

Using USSD Safely

  • Never share your USSD PIN, card PIN or any one-time code with anyone. A real bank does not need them from you.
  • Confirm a code from the bank's own website, app or card materials before dialling it, especially if you found it in a message or a social post.
  • Block USSD immediately if your phone or SIM goes missing (see the table above), then contact your bank.
  • If a transfer menu shows a different beneficiary name from the one you expect, cancel it.

Tapping Dial on a phone opens your dialler with the code filled in. You still press call yourself, so nothing runs until you do.

How We Checked These Codes

For each bank we looked for the code on the bank's own website, its own social post or its own announcement, and recorded which one. That source is linked under every entry. We did not take a code from a blog or a forum, and where the bank's own pages and other sites disagreed, we left the bank out and said so above.

The shortcuts under each bank are the ones that bank publishes. We list them as published and do not test them against live accounts. Every code on this page was last checked on 18 Sep 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the USSD code for GTBank, Access, UBA, Zenith and FirstBank?

GTBank is *737#, Access Bank is *901#, UBA is *919#, Zenith Bank is *966# and FirstBank is *894#. Each was checked against the bank's own page on 18 Sep 2026.

What is a USSD code?

It is a short code that starts with an asterisk and ends with a hash, which you dial on your phone to open a menu from your bank. It works over your mobile network, so it does not need an internet connection.

Do I need data or internet to use USSD banking?

No. Banks such as GTBank, FirstBank, Zenith Bank and Keystone Bank describe their USSD service as working without internet. You do need a network signal, and some banks also need a small amount of airtime.

Which phone number can I dial from?

The number registered with your bank. GTBank, Access Bank, Wema Bank and Keystone Bank state that the service works from the registered number, so dial from that SIM.

How were these USSD codes checked?

For each bank we looked for the code on the bank's own website, its own social post or its own announcement, and linked that source under the entry. We did not take codes from blogs or forums. All codes on this page were last checked on 18 Sep 2026.

Why is my bank not on the list?

We list a bank only when we have seen its code on a page the bank itself publishes. Globus Bank, Optimus Bank, PremiumTrust Bank and the pre-merger Providus Bank code could not be confirmed that way, so they are left out rather than guessed.

Did the Union Bank and Titan Trust merger, or the Providus and Unity merger, change any codes?

Union Bank and Titan Trust Bank became one bank on 1 September 2025, and the code listed here is Union Bank's own, *826#. Providus Bank and Unity Bank merged in 2026 as ProvidusUnity Bank. We list Unity Bank's *7799# from its own announcement, but we could not find a new code list from the merged bank, so confirm with the bank if it does not respond.

What should I do if I lose my phone?

Block USSD access straight away and then contact your bank. Access Bank publishes *901*911#, FCMB *329*911#, Stanbic IBTC Bank *909*1*911# and Zenith Bank *966*911#. For other banks, call the number on your card, use the bank's app from another device or visit a branch.

Is USSD banking safe?

It needs a PIN and works from your registered number, but you still have to protect it. Never share your PIN or any one-time code, confirm a code on your bank's own site before dialling it, and check the beneficiary name before you confirm a transfer.

What are the fees and limits for USSD transactions?

They differ by bank and can change, so this page does not list them. Check your bank's own USSD page or terms before you transact.

Is there a USSD code for Heritage Bank?

We do not list one. The Central Bank of Nigeria revoked Heritage Bank's licence in 2024, even though some older lists still show a code for it.

A code on this page did not work. What should I do?

Confirm it on the bank's own website or app, because banks can change codes. Then tell us on the contact page with a link to the bank's page, and we will recheck it.

USSD codes and menus are set by each bank and can change without notice. AbokiCalculator is not affiliated with any bank named on this page and does not process any transaction. Confirm a code with your bank before use. Not financial advice.
