Ghana Bank Code Checker
Search a Ghanaian bank for its bank code, SWIFT/BIC and address, or check a 6-digit sort code.
Ghanaian banks are identified by a 6-digit sort code, such as 04-07-01. The first two digits are the bank code (04 is GCB Bank, 13 is Ecobank), the next two are the clearing zone and the last two are the branch. Type a bank name or a bank code, and the checker shows the bank code, name, branch sort codes, SWIFT/BIC, address and domestic transfer information. Type a sort code, and it shows the bank, the zone and the branch. It has 25 banks and 1,671 sort codes.

What a Ghana Bank Code Is
In Ghana the code that names a bank and a branch is the sort code. It has 6 digits and is printed on cheques and other paper payment instruments. The Bank of Ghana says the sort codes were allocated so that they identify the bank, the clearing zone in which the branch is located and the branch number. Its example is 01-02-03: the first two digits are the bank's code, the second two are the code of the clearing zone, and the last two are the branch's code. The bank code is therefore the first two digits, which are the same for every branch of a bank.
GCB Bank
Clearing Zones and Cheque Clearing
The Bank of Ghana says it divided the country into 11 clearing zones, each with its own clearing house. Since 16 January 2010 cheques are cleared electronically through one national clearing house at GhIPSS in Accra, and the Bank of Ghana says the sort codes developed for the old zones are still used to route payments to the paying bank. Its document gives the clearing cycle for cheques as D+1: D is the day the cheque is deposited and the image is captured, and 1 is the day of clearing and settlement. The document does not name the zones, so the checker shows the zone as a code only.
GhIPSS Instant Pay
GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP) is a real-time transfer from one bank account to another across financial institutions. GhIPSS says it is available all the time, and that banks offer it through channels such as a mobile banking app, USSD, internet banking, a branch, ATMs and POS devices. The GhIPSS page on GIP does not mention sort codes, so ask your bank what a transfer needs.
Sending Money to Ghana From Abroad
A payment from another country normally goes by the receiving bank's SWIFT/BIC code, the account number and the account holder's name. Ghana is not in the IBAN registry, so there is no IBAN to give. The sort code is for payments inside Ghana. Of the BICs on this page, 19 are confirmed by public LEI records, and the checker says so. The other 6 come from public lists of SWIFT codes. Confirm any BIC with the recipient's bank, and check its format on our SWIFT code checker.
Tips
- Write the sort code from the cheque book, the bank's app or the branch, and check it here for the bank and the branch.
- A sort code that has the right layout but is not in the list may belong to a new or closed branch. Ask the bank.
- GhIPSS lists ARB Apex Bank and the rural and community banks together under one bank code, 07.
- Some banks have changed their names. The Bank of Ghana's 2017 document lists Absa's code, 03, under Barclays Bank, and the checker finds it under either name.
What This Page Uses
The sort codes and branch names come from the GhIPSS bank sort code pages, headed "Clearing House Sort Codes as of 1 September 2026", where each bank's page is dated 11 July 2026. We compared them with the Bank of Ghana's list of sort codes, which is older: it has 1,377 rows against 1,671, and it lists two bank codes that GhIPSS no longer does, 27 (BSIC Bank Ghana) and 39 (GHL Bank). The structure of the sort code, the clearing zones and the clearing cycle come from the Bank of Ghana's Banks' Sort Codes, August 2017. We asked GLEIF, whose LEI data is open under the CC0 licence, about each BIC through the Swift and GLEIF mapping, and 19 banks have a legal entity record, which gave the address. The other BICs come from the public lists of SWIFT codes at theswiftcodes.com and Wise. The facts about GIP come from the GhIPSS page on GhIPSS Instant Pay. Neither the Bank of Ghana nor GhIPSS states terms for reusing the lists, so we credit them here, and the lists remain theirs. We last checked on 20 September 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Ghana bank code?
In Ghana a bank and a branch are named by a 6-digit sort code. The bank code is the first two digits of it, and it is the same for every branch of the bank. For example the bank code of GCB Bank is 04 and of Ecobank 13. The finder has 25 banks and 1,671 sort codes.
What is the bank code of GCB, Ecobank, Absa and Stanbic?
GCB Bank is 04, Ecobank is 13, Absa is 03 and Stanbic is 19. Fidelity is 24 and Zenith is 12. Search for any other bank above.
How is a Ghanaian sort code built?
The Bank of Ghana says the sort code has 6 digits: the first two are the bank's code, the next two are the code of the clearing zone in which the branch is located, and the last two are the branch's code. In 04-07-01 for example, 04 is GCB Bank, 07 is the clearing zone and 01 is the branch. The finder shows the branch name of a sort code that is in the list.
What is a clearing zone?
The Bank of Ghana says it divided the country into 11 clearing zones, each with a clearing house, to clear cheques. Since 16 January 2010 cheques are cleared electronically through one national clearing house at GhIPSS in Accra, and the sort codes of the old zones are still used to route payments to the paying bank. The Bank of Ghana's document does not name the zones, so the finder shows the zone as a code.
Do I need a sort code for a GhIPSS Instant Pay transfer?
GhIPSS describes GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP) as a real-time transfer from one bank account to another, available all the time, through channels such as a mobile banking app, USSD and internet banking. Its page does not mention sort codes. Ask your bank what a transfer needs.
Is the sort code the same as the SWIFT/BIC?
No. The sort code has 6 digits and is for payments inside Ghana. A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters and is for payments from abroad. For example the BIC of GCB Bank is GHCBGHAC and of Ecobank ECOCGHAC. Check the format of a BIC on our SWIFT code checker.
What do I need to receive money from abroad in Ghana?
Your bank's SWIFT/BIC code, your account number and your name as it is on the account. Ghana is not in the IBAN registry, so there is no IBAN to give. The sort code is not what a sender abroad normally uses.
Where does the list of sort codes come from?
From the pages of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), which is owned by the Bank of Ghana. GhIPSS heads its list "Clearing House Sort Codes as of 1 September 2026", and each bank's page is dated 11 July 2026. It has 1,671 sort codes for 25 banks.
Why does the Bank of Ghana's list differ?
The Bank of Ghana's page of sort codes is older. It has 1,377 rows against 1,671 in GhIPSS's list, and it has two bank codes that GhIPSS no longer lists: 27 (BSIC Bank Ghana) and 39 (GHL Bank). If you type one of them, the finder tells you so. We used GhIPSS's list because it is the newer.
Why is a sort code not in the list?
A sort code can have the right layout and still not be in the list, for example because of a typing mistake, or because the branch is new or has closed. The finder then names the bank and says the branch is not in the list. Ask the bank.
Why do some banks have no LEI record?
6 of the 25 banks have no record in the public LEI data that is tied to their BIC, so their BIC comes from public lists of SWIFT codes, and the finder has no address for them. Confirm the BIC with the bank.
How current is this page?
GhIPSS's list is as of 1 September 2026. Banks merge, rename and open and close branches, so confirm a sort code with the bank. We last checked on 20 September 2026.
Is anything I type stored or sent?
No. The search runs in your browser on data that is inside the page. Nothing you type is stored or sent.
