ACH Routing Number

ACH Routing Number Checker

Check a US routing number for ACH, and see when an ACH payment settles under the Federal Reserve's schedule.

An ACH routing number is a nine-digit ABA routing number, and its last digit is a check digit that this page tests. The number for ACH can be different from the one for wires, so use the number your bank gives you for ACH. ACH is not instant. Through the Federal Reserve's FedACH service, Same Day ACH settles at 1:00, 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. ET depending on when the file arrives, and other payments settle at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day or later.

When Does an ACH Payment Settle?

Enter when the sending bank's file reaches the Federal Reserve, in Eastern Time. Your own bank sets an earlier deadline for your request, and it decides when the money appears in the account.

This page checks the arithmetic of a routing number and applies the Federal Reserve's published FedACH schedule. It cannot tell you which bank a number belongs to, or whether the bank takes ACH on it. Settlement is when the Federal Reserve settles between banks. Banks post payments to accounts on their own schedules, which can be later. Confirm the routing number and account number with the recipient before you send money.

The FedACH Schedule for Same Day ACH

These are the Federal Reserve's transmission deadlines and settlement times for Same Day ACH forward items, in Eastern Time, effective 12 September 2022. Payments that miss the last deadline, and payments that are not Same Day, settle at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day, or on the later effective date.

Same Day ACH does not take international transactions (IAT), automated enrollment entries (ENR) or payments above $1,000,000, and a payment with a future date does not qualify. Nacha's members have approved a rule that raises the Same Day ACH limit to $10 million from 17 September 2027, so the $1,000,000 limit applies until then.

FedACH Holiday Schedule for 2026

FedACH does not process on Federal Reserve holidays. The Federal Reserve publishes when processing ends and resumes around each one. These are its times, in Eastern Time.

What an ACH Routing Number Is

ACH, the Automated Clearing House network, moves payments such as direct deposits, bill payments and bank-to-bank transfers in batches. A bank is identified on it by a nine-digit ABA routing number. The first four digits are the Federal Reserve routing symbol, and the ninth is a check digit. See our ABA routing number guide for the structure.

The ACH Number Can Differ From the Wire Number

A bank can have more than one routing number, and the number for ACH can differ from the one for wires. The Federal Reserve publishes information for FedACH and for Fedwire separately for this reason. A number that passes the check digit test can still be the wrong one for an ACH payment. Use the number your bank gives you for the kind of payment you are making. Do not take a routing number from a website, including this one, without confirming it.

How to Check an ACH Routing Number With the Fed

The Federal Reserve Banks' E-Payments Routing Directory has a search for FedACH participant RDFIs, the receiving banks, with commercial receipt volume. Its terms say the information cannot be sold, re-licensed or otherwise used for commercial gain, and it is provided for financial institutions and other authorised users to process payments. This site therefore does not copy it, and it links to it instead.

How Long ACH Takes

ACH settles in the windows above, and the sending bank chooses the timing. A payment sent as Same Day ACH before the first deadline settles at 1:00 p.m. ET the same day. A standard payment settles at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day at the earliest, and a payment with a later date settles on that date. The banking days are the Federal Reserve Banks' business days, so weekends and Federal Reserve holidays do not count. Your bank decides when the money reaches your account, and how quickly, so ask it.

Be careful with new bank details. If someone sends you new routing and account numbers by email or message, call a number you already trust before you send money. A routing number that passes this check is not evidence that a request to pay is genuine.

What This Page Uses

The check digit test is the ABA test, and the prefix meanings are from Regulation CC, Appendix A. The settlement times are from the Federal Reserve Financial Services' FedACH Processing Schedule, effective 12 September 2022, and the Same Day limit and exclusions are from its FedACH SameDay Service page. The holidays are from its holiday schedules. We checked our banking-day rules against the Federal Reserve's printed FedACH holiday table for 2026. We last checked on 19 September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ACH routing number?

The nine-digit ABA routing number that identifies a US bank or credit union for ACH payments such as direct deposits and bill payments. Its last digit is a check digit, and this page tests it.

Is the ACH routing number the same as the wire routing number?

Not always. A bank can have more than one routing number, and the number for ACH can differ from the one for wires. The Federal Reserve publishes FedACH and Fedwire information separately. Use the number your bank gives you for ACH.

How do I find my bank's ACH routing number?

Ask your bank, or look in your online banking under account details. It is also printed on your cheques. You can confirm it in the Federal Reserve's E-Payments Routing Directory, which has a search for FedACH participant banks. Do not rely on a number from a search result or an email you did not expect.

How long does an ACH payment take?

It depends on the sending bank. Through FedACH, a standard payment settles at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day at the earliest, or on its later effective date. A Same Day ACH payment settles at 1:00, 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. ET the same day. Your bank decides when the money appears in the account.

What are the Same Day ACH deadlines?

The Federal Reserve's FedACH schedule has three windows for Same Day ACH. A file must arrive by 10:30 a.m. ET to settle at 1:00 p.m., by 2:45 p.m. ET to settle at 5:00 p.m., and by 4:45 p.m. ET to settle at 6:00 p.m. A file that arrives later settles at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day.

What is the Same Day ACH limit?

The Federal Reserve's SameDay service page says the ACH Rules exclude international transactions (IAT), automated enrollment entries (ENR) and transactions above $1,000,000. An item must also be received by a same-day deadline and must not carry a future date. Nacha's members approved a rule on 27 April 2026 that raises the limit to $10 million from 17 September 2027.

Does ACH work on weekends and holidays?

No. FedACH settles on banking days, which are the Federal Reserve Banks' business days. Saturdays, Sundays and Federal Reserve holidays are not banking days. The table on this page gives the Federal Reserve's FedACH times for the 2026 holidays.

What is the difference between ACH, Fedwire and FedNow?

ACH moves payments in files at set times. Fedwire and FedNow move them one at a time. Fedwire is open 22 hours a day on business days, and FedNow runs around the clock every day. The network limit is $10 billion for Fedwire and $10 million for FedNow. Same Day ACH is limited to $1,000,000.

Why is my ACH payment taking longer than expected?

Check whether it was sent as Same Day ACH, whether it has a later effective date, and whether a weekend or a Federal Reserve holiday fell in between. Your bank also decides when it posts a payment to the account. If the expected day has passed, contact your bank and give it the payment details.

Can this page tell me which bank a routing number belongs to?

No. The Federal Reserve Banks' E-Payments Routing Directory says its information may not be sold, re-licensed or otherwise used for commercial gain, so we do not copy it. Search it directly to identify a bank.

Does the routing number tell me the state or city of the bank?

Only loosely. The first two digits tell you the Federal Reserve district, or the bank type. They do not give a state or a branch. A bank can use the same number nationwide.

Where do these times come from and how current are they?

From the Federal Reserve Financial Services' FedACH Processing Schedule, effective 12 September 2022, its FedACH SameDay Service page, and its holiday schedules. We last checked on 19 September 2026. The Federal Reserve can change the schedule, so check its pages if it matters.

Is anything I type stored or sent?

No. The checks run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved by this page.

This page is for information only. It does not contact any bank or the Federal Reserve. Confirm payment details with your bank before you send money. Not financial advice.
