What a MICR Code Is
MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. A MICR code is the nine-digit sort field printed in magnetic ink at the bottom of a cheque, and machines read it to sort and clear the cheque. The Reserve Bank of India's guidelines say the first three digits represent the city, the next three the bank, and the last three the branch. It identifies a bank branch. The RBI's guidelines say the code is unique for any bank branch in the country.
Where to Find Your MICR Code
Look at the bottom of a cheque leaf. The nine-digit number after the six-digit cheque number is the MICR code of the branch. You can also ask your branch, or search this page. Choose your city, pick your bank, and look for your branch.
Tips for Finding a Branch
- Search by the area name, such as "Andheri" or "Connaught", and not only by the branch's full name.
- The service branch of a bank generally has the branch code 001, which is the last three digits.
- If your branch is not listed, the code may have changed. Read the code from a cheque leaf.
- Some cities have more than one city code, so a search can show several codes.
MICR and IFSC Are Different Codes
The IFSC is an 11-character code for electronic transfers such as NEFT, RTGS and IMPS. A MICR code has nine digits and is used to clear cheques. Each result on this page also shows the branch's IFSC. Check any IFSC with our IFSC code checker.
What This Page Uses
The structure of the code is from the Reserve Bank of India's Mechanised Cheque Processing Using MICR Technology: Procedural Guidelines (abridged, updated as on 31 January 2014). The branches come from the Razorpay open IFSC dataset, release v2.0.62 of 1 September 2026, which is in the public domain and is built from the RBI's NEFT and RTGS lists and NPCI's lists. It has 153,343 branches with a nine-digit MICR code. We changed only the letter case of names. The RBI also has its own MICR search. We last checked on 19 September 2026.
