Fedwire Routing Code Checker
Check a US routing number for a wire transfer, and see whether the Fedwire Funds Service is open now.
A Fedwire routing number is a nine-digit ABA routing number that a US bank uses for wire transfers. Its last digit is a check digit, and this page tests it. The number for wires can be different from the one for ACH, so use the one your bank gives you for wires. Fedwire is open from 9:00 p.m. ET the evening before until 7:00 p.m. ET on business days, and the cut-off for customer transfers is 6:45 p.m. ET. It is closed on weekends and on Federal Reserve holidays.

Is Fedwire Open?
Fedwire keeps Eastern Time. Your device's clock is converted for you, and you can change the day and time to plan ahead.
Fedwire Funds Service Hours and Cut-Offs
A funds-transfer business day begins at 9:00 p.m. ET on the calendar day before, including when that day is a holiday, and ends at 7:00 p.m. ET. For example, the service opens on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET for the Monday business day. It stops taking each kind of message at its own cut-off:
| Cut-off | What |
|---|---|
| 5:00 p.m. ET | Tax payments, and special account transfers |
| 6:45 p.m. ET | Customer transfers, and customer drawdown requests |
| 7:00 p.m. ET | Bank transfers, cover payments and other messages |
These are the Federal Reserve's times for banks that send messages to it. Your bank has to receive your wire request before that, so its own cut-off is earlier, and it is set by your bank.
Federal Reserve Holidays: Days Fedwire Is Closed
Fedwire is also closed on every Saturday and Sunday. A holiday on a Saturday does not close the Reserve Banks on the Friday before, and a holiday on a Sunday closes them on the Monday after. The table shows the days Fedwire is closed.

What a Fedwire Routing Number Is
Fedwire is the Federal Reserve Banks' service for individual electronic funds transfers between banks and credit unions. A bank is identified on it by a nine-digit routing number, the same ABA number format used for ACH and for the routing number printed on a cheque. The first four digits are the Federal Reserve routing symbol, and the ninth is a check digit. See our ABA routing number guide for the structure.
The Wire Number Can Differ From the ACH Number
A bank can have more than one routing number, and the number for wires can differ from the one for ACH. The Federal Reserve publishes routing information for Fedwire and for FedACH separately for this reason. A number that passes the check digit test can still be the wrong one for a wire. Use the number your bank or your recipient gives you for wires. If you are unsure, ask them. Do not take a routing number from a website, including this one, without confirming it.
How to Check a Wire Routing Number With the Fed
The Federal Reserve Banks publish the E-Payments Routing Directory, with a Fedwire search. It says which institution a routing number belongs to and whether it takes Fedwire transfers. Its terms do not allow its information to be used for commercial gain, so this site does not copy it, and it links to it instead.
Limits and Other Payment Options
| Fedwire Funds Service | FedNow Service | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs | 22 hours a day on business days | Around the clock, every day |
| Network limit per payment | $10 billion | $10 million since 12 November 2025 |
| Your bank's limit | Set by your bank | Participants can set lower limits |
The Board describes the Fedwire Funds Service as a wholesale payment service for individual electronic funds transfers of up to $10 billion. The Federal Reserve Financial Services announced the FedNow increase from $1 million to $10 million on 12 November 2025. Both are payments in US dollars inside the United States. Fees for a wire are set by your bank, and we do not give typical fees because they differ widely.
Wires From Abroad
A wire into a US account from another country usually needs the receiving bank's SWIFT/BIC code and your account number, and sometimes the US bank's routing number as well. Ask your US bank exactly what the sender must give. Find SWIFT codes with our SWIFT code lookup.

What This Page Uses
The check digit test is the ABA test, and the prefix meanings are from Regulation CC, Appendix A. The operating hours and cut-offs are from the Federal Reserve Financial Services' Fedwire Funds Service schedule, and the holidays are from its holiday schedules for 2026 to 2030. The limit and the Sunday plan are from the Federal Reserve Board's announcement of 9 October 2025. The FedNow limit is from the Federal Reserve Financial Services' notice of 12 November 2025, and its round-the-clock service is described on the Board's FedNow page. We checked our holiday rules against the Federal Reserve's printed table for 2026 to 2030. We last checked on 19 September 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Fedwire routing number?
The nine-digit ABA routing number that a US bank or credit union uses to receive wire transfers over the Federal Reserve's Fedwire Funds Service. It has the same format as an ACH routing number, and the last digit is a check digit.
Is the Fedwire routing number the same as the ACH routing number?
Not always. A bank can have more than one routing number, and the number for wires can differ from the one for ACH. The Federal Reserve publishes Fedwire and FedACH routing information separately. Use the number your bank gives you for wires.
How do I check whether a routing number is valid?
Multiply digits 1, 4 and 7 by 3, digits 2, 5 and 8 by 7, and digits 3, 6 and 9 by 1, then add the results. The number passes if the total divides by 10. The checker on this page does this and shows the district. A pass shows the digits are consistent. It does not show that a bank uses the number.
How do I find the wire routing number for my bank?
Ask your bank, or look in your online banking under account details or wire instructions. You can confirm it in the Federal Reserve's E-Payments Routing Directory, which has a Fedwire search. Do not rely on a number from a search result or an email you did not expect.
What are the Fedwire operating hours?
The Fedwire Funds Service is open 22 hours a day on business days. A business day starts at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the calendar day before and ends at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. For example, it opens on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. for the Monday business day.
What is the Fedwire cut-off time?
The Federal Reserve stops taking messages from banks at 5:00 p.m. ET for tax payments and special accounts, at 6:45 p.m. ET for customer transfers, and at 7:00 p.m. ET for bank transfers and other messages. Your own bank has an earlier cut-off for wire requests, and it sets that time.
Is Fedwire open on weekends and holidays?
No. It is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and the Federal Reserve holidays. The Federal Reserve Board announced on 9 October 2025 that it will add Sundays and weekday holidays, no earlier than 2028, with the same daily hours.
Is Good Friday a Fedwire holiday?
No. Good Friday is not on the Federal Reserve Banks' holiday list, so Fedwire runs on it. The holidays are New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
For a holiday on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve Banks are open the Friday before. For a holiday on a Sunday, they are closed the following Monday. In 2026, 4 July is a Saturday, so Friday 3 July is a business day, and in 2027, 4 July is a Sunday, so Monday 5 July is a holiday.
What is the maximum amount for a wire on Fedwire?
The Federal Reserve Board describes the Fedwire Funds Service as allowing individual transfers of up to $10 billion. Your bank sets its own limits for customers, and many are far lower.
How much does a Fedwire transfer cost?
Your bank sets the fee, and it differs between banks and account types. We do not publish typical fees because we found no public source for them. Check your bank's fee schedule before you send.
What is the difference between Fedwire and FedNow?
Both are Federal Reserve services for payments in US dollars. Fedwire is open 22 hours a day on business days, and FedNow runs 24 hours a day, every day. The FedNow network limit has been $10 million since 12 November 2025, and Fedwire's is $10 billion. Your bank must offer the service you want.
Can I use Fedwire to send money abroad?
No. Fedwire moves US dollars between US institutions. An international wire uses SWIFT, and a US bank can use Fedwire for the US part. A wire into a US account from abroad usually needs the bank's SWIFT code and your account number, and sometimes its routing number, so ask your bank.
Can I get a wire back if I made a mistake or was tricked?
Call your bank at once. It can ask the receiving bank to return the money, but a wire is hard to recall, and the funds may already have been moved. Never send money because of an email or message asking for new bank details without calling a number you already trust.
Where does the data come from and how current is it?
The hours, cut-offs and holidays are from the Federal Reserve Financial Services' Fedwire Funds Service schedule and its holiday schedules for 2026 to 2030. The limits are from the Federal Reserve Board's announcement of 9 October 2025 and the FedNow notice of 12 November 2025. We last checked on 19 September 2026.
Is anything I type stored or sent?
No. The checks run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved by this page.
