What Is BEFTN in Bangladesh?

BEFTN stands for Bangladesh Electronic Funds Transfer Network. It is Bangladesh's domestic interbank electronic payment system, operated by Bangladesh Bank (the central bank). Introduced in 2011, BEFTN modernised interbank transfers in Bangladesh by replacing paper-based cheque clearing for many transaction types. BEFTN uses 9-digit routing numbers to identify specific bank branches, structured as three groups of three digits: the bank identifier, district code, and branch sequence number.

BEFTN is used for domestic payments within Bangladesh, including salary disbursements, pension payments, supplier payments, and interbank fund transfers. It is similar in purpose to India's NEFT or the UK's BACS. BEFTN supports both credit and debit transfers and processes in batches throughout the day during Bangladesh Bank's operating hours.

BEFTN vs SWIFT: Domestic vs International

The most important distinction for the Bangladeshi diaspora is that BEFTN codes only work for transfers within Bangladesh. If you are in the UK, USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, or anywhere outside Bangladesh and want to send money to a Bangladeshi bank account, the sender needs the bank's SWIFT code, not the BEFTN routing number. The BEFTN code plays no role in international wire transfers.

For international wire transfers to Bangladesh, the sender needs the recipient's: full name, account number, bank name, bank branch name, bank address, and SWIFT code (also called BIC). Bangladesh is one of the top ten remittance-receiving countries globally, with over $21 billion received in 2023, mostly from Middle Eastern countries, the UK, and the USA.
