German BLZ Code Checker
Look up a Bankleitzahl, find the BLZ inside an IBAN, or search 3,507 valid BLZ from the Bundesbank's file.
A German BLZ (Bankleitzahl) is an 8-digit code that the Deutsche Bundesbank allocates to a payment service provider, such as 500 700 10 for Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt. In a German IBAN it is digits 5 to 12. For SEPA payments you use the IBAN, and the BLZ is no longer needed separately. This page uses the Bundesbank's file valid from 7 September 2026 to 6 December 2026, and shows the bank, place, BIC and structure of each BLZ.
Look up a BLZ or IBAN
Enter 8 digits, with or without spaces, or a German IBAN (DE and 20 digits). Nothing you type leaves your browser, and it is not saved.
The example IBAN is a well-known sample, not a real account.
Find a BLZ
No BLZ matches. Try part of the bank's name, the city, or the BIC. The list has one entry per BLZ, so a branch town may not appear if the BLZ is listed under the bank's main location.
BLZ of Well-Known German Banks
These are BLZ from the Bundesbank's file for some well-known banks. Most banks have many BLZ, and yours depends on your own account, so treat this as a reference and use your IBAN.

What a BLZ Is
BLZ stands for Bankleitzahl, which means bank sort code. The Deutsche Bundesbank allocates it to payment service providers in Germany: banks, payment institutions and other providers. It has eight digits, and it is written in blocks of three, three and two, such as 500 700 10. The Bundesbank publishes the list of valid BLZ in its Bankleitzahlendatei, which it updates every quarter.
What the Eight Digits Mean
The Bundesbank's Merkblatt Bankleitzahlendatei sets out the structure:
- Digit 1 is the clearing area where the provider has its seat.
- Digits 1 to 3 are the place number, which identifies a Bundesbank branch town and its district.
- Digit 4 is the institution group.
- Digits 5 to 8 are the institution's own numbering, which it sets itself with the Bundesbank.
| Digit 1 | Clearing area |
|---|---|
| 1 | Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern |
| 2 | Bremen, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein |
| 3 | Rheinland (Regierungsbezirke Düsseldorf, Köln) |
| 4 | Westfalen |
| 5 | Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland |
| 6 | Baden-Württemberg |
| 7 | Bayern |
| 8 | Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen |
| Digit 4 | Institution group |
|---|---|
| 0 | Deutsche Bundesbank |
| 1 to 3 | Payment service providers not in another group |
| 4 | Commerzbank |
| 5 | Girozentralen and Sparkassen (savings banks) |
| 6 and 9 | Cooperative central banks, credit cooperatives and former cooperatives |
| 7 | Deutsche Bank |
| 8 | Commerzbank, formerly Dresdner Bank |
The Bundesbank says a BLZ can be kept when a provider moves area or changes group, for example after a merger, so the digits show where and what a BLZ was first allocated for and not always where an institution is now. Postbank, a branch of Deutsche Bank, always has the digits 100 in positions 4 to 6.
The BLZ Inside an IBAN
A German IBAN has 22 characters: DE, two check digits, the 8-digit BLZ and a 10-digit account number. In DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00, the BLZ is 37040044 and the account number is 0532013000. You can paste an IBAN into the tool above to see its BLZ, its account number and the bank. The tool checks the IBAN's check digits, and it does not check the account number's own check digit.
Do You Still Need a BLZ?
For SEPA payments you give the IBAN, and the BLZ is part of it. The Bundesbank's Merkblatt asks businesses to show their bank details as IBAN, BIC and the bank's name on documents, and not to show the BLZ separately. You may still see a BLZ in older software, on forms, or when a bank's help pages ask for it.
The Account Number Check Method
The Bundesbank's file gives each BLZ a two-character code for the method that checks account numbers. Banks must use account numbers that pass their own method, and the code 09 means the bank does not use a check calculation. This tool shows the code and does not calculate account number checks. The Bundesbank publishes the method descriptions on its site.
Planned Deletions and Successors
A bank can announce that a BLZ will be deleted, and it may name a successor BLZ. The BLZ still works until it is deleted. You generally cannot swap the BLZ inside an IBAN for the successor yourself. Ask the bank for the new IBAN. In the file of 7 September 2026, 75 BLZ carry a planned deletion, and 2 are marked as deleted from the validity date.
The Data This Page Uses
Source: Deutsche Bundesbank, Bankleitzahlendatei, valid 7 September 2026 to 6 December 2026. The Bundesbank's terms allow its information to be reproduced for business use if it is not changed and the source is given. The file has 13,760 records. This page uses the 3,507 that are valid BLZ records, one per BLZ, and shows names, places and BICs as the Bundesbank publishes them. The other records are further locations of the same BLZ.
The Bundesbank creates a new file every quarter, on the Monday after the first Saturday of March, June, September and December, and publishes it three to four weeks before. The next file is valid from 7 December 2026. We last checked on 19 September 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BLZ in Germany?
BLZ stands for Bankleitzahl, or bank sort code. It is an 8-digit code that the Deutsche Bundesbank allocates to a payment service provider in Germany, and it is written in blocks of three, three and two, such as 500 700 10.
What do the digits of a BLZ mean?
According to the Bundesbank, digit 1 is the clearing area, digits 1 to 3 are the place number, digit 4 is the institution group and digits 5 to 8 are the institution's own numbering.
What does the first digit of a BLZ mean?
It is the clearing area: 1 Berlin, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; 2 Bremen, Hamburg, Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein; 3 the Rheinland districts of Düsseldorf and Köln; 4 Westfalen; 5 Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland; 6 Baden-Württemberg; 7 Bayern; 8 Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen.
What does the fourth digit of a BLZ mean?
It is the institution group: 0 the Bundesbank; 1 to 3 payment service providers not in another group; 4 Commerzbank; 5 Girozentralen and Sparkassen; 6 and 9 cooperative central banks and credit cooperatives; 7 Deutsche Bank; 8 Commerzbank, formerly Dresdner Bank. A BLZ can keep its digits after a merger, so the group shows how it was first allocated.
Where is the BLZ in a German IBAN?
In digits 5 to 12. A German IBAN is DE, two check digits, the 8-digit BLZ and a 10-digit account number. In DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00, the BLZ is 37040044 and the account number is 0532013000.
Do I still need a BLZ?
For SEPA payments you give the IBAN, and the BLZ is part of it. The Bundesbank's Merkblatt asks businesses to show IBAN, BIC and the bank's name on documents and not to show the BLZ separately. You may still see a BLZ in older software or forms.
How do I find my bank's BLZ?
Look at digits 5 to 12 of your IBAN, which you can paste into the tool above. The BLZ depends on your own account, because banks have many BLZ, so the list of well-known banks is a reference and not a rule.
What is the BIC for a BLZ?
The Bundesbank's file holds one BIC for each BLZ, and providers must be reachable under that BIC for SEPA payments. The tool shows it. It can differ between BLZ of the same bank.
What is the account number check method?
It is a two-character code in the Bundesbank's file for the way a bank checks account numbers. The code 09 means no check calculation. This tool shows the code and does not calculate account number checks.
Why does one bank have many BLZ?
A bank can have BLZ for different places and business areas, and mergers can leave two BLZ for a while. The Bundesbank marks the older one "-alt-" in the name. Use the BLZ inside the IBAN your bank gave you.
What is a planned deletion and a successor BLZ?
A bank can announce that a BLZ will be deleted, and can name a successor. The BLZ works until it is deleted. You generally cannot replace the BLZ inside an IBAN yourself, so ask the bank for the new IBAN. In the file of 7 September 2026, 75 BLZ carry a planned deletion.
Why is my BLZ not found?
It may have a typing mistake, it may have been deleted, or it may not be a German BLZ. The tool uses one entry per BLZ from the file of 7 September 2026 to 6 December 2026, so a BLZ that the bank added afterwards is missing until the next file.
Is a BLZ the same as a sort code or routing number?
It does the same job as a UK sort code or a US ABA routing number, which is to identify a bank for domestic payments. The numbers are not interchangeable. Germany now uses the IBAN for domestic payments.
Where does the data come from and how current is it?
From the Deutsche Bundesbank's Bankleitzahlendatei, valid 7 September 2026 to 6 December 2026 (13,760 records, of which 3,507 are valid BLZ). The Bundesbank creates a new file every quarter. We last checked on 19 September 2026. Quelle: Deutsche Bundesbank.
Is anything I type stored or sent?
No. The lookup and the search run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved by this page.
