The EPC also lists 5 territories and 11 parts of countries, such as the Canary Islands. Nigeria, Brazil and the United States are not in SEPA. Having an IBAN does not make a country a SEPA member.

The EPC's list gives dates only for the additions above. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, which is why the euro area now has 21 members.
Countries With an IBAN That Are Not in SEPA
These 47 countries have an IBAN format in the SWIFT registry and are not on the EPC list. A payment to one of them is not a SEPA payment. It is an international transfer that can cost more and take longer. Countries such as Australia, Canada, China and Ghana do not use IBANs at all.

Who Is in SEPA
SEPA, the Single Euro Payments Area, is the area where the EPC's payment schemes work. It is not the same as the EU or the euro area. It is the 27 EU states, three EEA states and eleven other countries, plus the territories the EPC names. A payment in the SEPA schemes is always in euro, even in a country that has its own currency.
The Countries Outside the EU
Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are in the European Economic Area. The other eleven are Albania, Andorra, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Vatican City State. The EPC also names the territories Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Their banks join the schemes voluntarily. The EPC notes that EEA legislation such as Regulation 260/2012 only fully and directly applies to payments between institutions in the EU and the EEA.
The United Kingdom and Switzerland
The United Kingdom stayed in the SEPA scope after Brexit, and Switzerland has been in it since the EPC's resolutions of 2006 to 2013. UK and Swiss banks can send and receive SEPA payments, and the EPC's register lists some of them. The EU's rules on euro payments, including its limits on charges, do not apply to them directly.
SEPA Is Not the Euro Area
The euro area has 21 members, the EU states that use the euro. Andorra, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino and Vatican City State also use the euro without being members of the euro area. Countries such as Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Czechia, Hungary and Romania are in SEPA and keep their own currencies. The IBAN and the SEPA scheme work the same in all of them, but the payment itself must be in euro.
Territories and Parts of Countries
The EPC's list names places that use another country's IBAN prefix. Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man use GB. The Canary Islands use ES. The Azores and Madeira use PT. Åland uses FI. French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon use FR. Gibraltar has its own prefix, GI.

Is the UK in SEPA?
Yes. The EPC board decided on 7 March 2019 that the United Kingdom stays in the SEPA geographical scope after Brexit, from 1 February 2020. UK banks join the schemes voluntarily, and the EU rules do not apply to them directly.
Is Switzerland in SEPA?
Yes. Switzerland became part of the geographical scope by EPC Plenary resolutions between March 2006 and December 2013. Swiss IBANs start with CH and have 21 characters.
Are Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein in SEPA?
Yes. They are the three EEA countries that are not in the EU, and they are on the EPC list. Their currencies are the krone, the króna and the Swiss franc.
Which countries joined SEPA recently?
Montenegro and Albania were admitted on 21 November 2024, North Macedonia and Moldova were approved on 6 March 2025 and Serbia was admitted on 22 May 2025. Their earliest operational readiness dates were 5 October 2025 for the first four and May 2026 for Serbia. Many websites still say SEPA has 36 countries, which is out of date.
Are Nigeria, the United States or Brazil in SEPA?
No. None of them is on the EPC list. A payment to them is an international transfer. Brazil has an IBAN, but Nigeria and the United States do not use IBANs.
Does a country that uses IBAN belong to SEPA?
Not necessarily. The SWIFT registry has 47 IBAN countries that are not on the EPC list, such as Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Pakistan and the Faroe Islands. An IBAN identifies an account, and SEPA is a set of payment schemes with its own list of countries.
Do all SEPA countries use the euro?
No. Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Albania, Moldova, North Macedonia and Serbia keep their own currencies. SEPA payments are in euro, so a bank in those countries may convert the amount.
Is SEPA the same as the euro area?
No. The euro area has 21 members, the EU states that use the euro, since Bulgaria joined on 1 January 2026. Andorra, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino and Vatican City State also use the euro but are not euro-area members. SEPA covers 41 countries.
Are territories like Gibraltar, Jersey and the Canary Islands in SEPA?
Yes. The EPC list names Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon as territories, and it names parts of countries such as the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira, Åland, Réunion and Martinique. Gibraltar has its own IBAN prefix GI. The others use the prefix of their country: GB, ES, PT, FI or FR.
Which IBAN prefix does each place use?
Most countries use their own two-letter code. Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man use GB. The overseas parts of France and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon use FR. The Canary Islands use ES, the Azores and Madeira use PT, and Åland uses FI. The table on this page lists every prefix and length.
Can I send a SEPA payment in pounds, kroner or francs?
No. The SEPA schemes handle payments in euro. A country can be in SEPA and use its own currency, but the SEPA payment is in euro. Your bank can convert your money, and the conversion is outside the scheme.
Does every bank in a SEPA country offer SEPA Instant?
No. The EPC's register of 11 September 2026 lists no bank in Iceland, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Vatican City State. Use our SEPA Instant checker to see whether a specific bank is listed.
