Pakistan IBAN: What Changed in 2022
In October 2022, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) mandated that all licensed commercial banks issue IBAN (International Bank Account Numbers) to their customers. This brought Pakistan in line with the international IBAN standard used by over 80 countries. Before 2022, Pakistani bank accounts used a variety of formats, which made cross-border transfers more complicated and error-prone.
The Pakistan IBAN is exactly 24 characters: the two-letter country code PK, two numeric check digits calculated using the MOD-97 algorithm, a four-letter bank identifier code assigned by SBP, and a 16-digit account number. This is slightly shorter than the IBANs used by some European countries (Germany uses 22, UK uses 22, France uses 27) but follows the same underlying standard.
Receiving International Transfers with Your Pakistan IBAN
Since 2022, the Pakistani diaspora in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, UK, US, and elsewhere can provide their IBAN directly to employers, clients, and family members for international transfers. For SWIFT wire transfers, give the sender your 24-character IBAN, your bank's SWIFT code, and your bank's address. HBL's SWIFT code is HABBPKKA. UBL's is UNILPKKA. MCB's is MUCBPKKA. Meezan Bank's is MEZNPKKA.
For the growing class of Pakistani freelancers and remote workers receiving salaries from abroad, services like Wise, Remitly, and WorldRemit have become the preferred alternative to SWIFT wires. These services typically only need your IBAN and bank name, settle faster (1-2 business days vs 3-5 for SWIFT), and charge lower fees. Some Pakistani banks have also introduced direct integrations with services like Wise for PKR transfers.
Islamic banking accounts at Meezan Bank, Bank Alfalah Islamic, MCB Islamic, Dubai Islamic Bank Pakistan, and BankIslami also have valid 24-character IBANs following the same format. They use the same IBAN standard, just with different bank codes (MEZN for Meezan, DISB for Dubai Islamic, BKIS for BankIslami).
