What Bank Details Do I Need?
Choose receive or send, local or international, and a country. See the details to give or to ask for.
For any bank transfer you need the account holder's name, the account number and the bank's name. An international transfer also needs the bank's SWIFT/BIC code, sometimes its address, and in the 90 countries and territories in this list that use IBANs, the IBAN. Some countries add a local code, such as a sort code, a routing number or an IFSC. We checked the local codes of 19 countries.

What Every Bank Transfer Needs
Every bank transfer needs three things: the name of the account holder as it is on the account, the account number and the bank. A wrong digit can send money to the wrong account, so read the details back to the person you are paying.
Local Bank Transfers
A transfer between two banks in the same country uses that country's own system. In many countries it also needs a local code that says which bank or branch holds the account. The codes have different names: a sort code in the UK, a routing number in the US, a BSB in Australia, an IFSC in India, a CLABE in Mexico and a BRSTN in the Philippines. Some countries have payment systems that need no bank code at all, such as FAST and PayNow in Singapore, FPS in Hong Kong and Pix in Brazil. The table further down lists the 19 countries whose local codes we checked.
International Bank Transfers
A payment from another country goes over the international network, so it needs to name the bank as well as the account. That is the job of the SWIFT/BIC code, which has 8 or 11 characters. Some senders and payment services also ask for the bank's address. In countries that use IBANs, the IBAN replaces the plain account number, because it contains the domestic bank and account numbers.
IBAN and SWIFT/BIC are not the same. An IBAN identifies a specific account. A SWIFT/BIC code identifies the bank. International payments often need both.
Receiving and Sending
The details are the same in both directions, and only who has to find them changes. When you receive money, you give the payer your details, and you can find them in your banking app, on a statement or by asking the bank. When you send money, you ask the recipient for their details, and the bank you send from may ask for more. This page lists what the receiving bank needs to identify the account.

Which Countries Use IBANs
The SWIFT IBAN Registry lists 89 countries. 87 of the countries in this list have an IBAN of their own, and 3 territories use the IBAN of another country, for example the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands use the UK's. Countries that are not in the registry, such as the United States, Nigeria, India, China and Japan, have no IBAN, and their accounts are identified by an account number and, in some countries, a local code. Having an IBAN does not make a country a SEPA member, and 44 of the countries and territories in the list are in SEPA. Check an IBAN on our IBAN validator.
Tips
- Copy the details from the bank's own app or statement instead of retyping them, and check the name and the digits before you send.
- Use the code your bank gives you. Some countries have more than one number for different payment types, such as ACH and wire routing numbers in the US.
- If the country shows no verified local code, ask your bank what a local transfer needs.
- Ask the receiving bank for its incoming international payment instructions if you are not sure.
What This Page Uses
The IBAN structures come from the SWIFT IBAN Registry, release 101, as published in open-source libraries and cross-checked against a second one. Territories that use another country's IBAN, and SEPA membership, come from the European Payments Council's list of SEPA scheme countries and territories, version 8.0 of 24 December 2025. The local bank codes are the ones on our own country pages, and each of those pages names its sources. The country names follow the World Bank style. We last checked on 20 September 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What bank details do I need to receive money from abroad?
Your name as it is on the account, your account number, your bank's name and its SWIFT/BIC code. Some senders also ask for the bank's address. In a country that uses IBANs you give your IBAN in place of the plain account number. A few countries add a local code. Choose your country above to see the list.
What bank details do I need to send money to someone abroad?
Ask the recipient for their name as it is on the account, their account number or IBAN, their bank's name and its SWIFT/BIC code, and the bank's address if your bank or payment service asks for it. Check an IBAN on our IBAN validator, and the format of a BIC on our SWIFT code checker.
What bank details do I need for a local bank transfer?
The account holder's name, the account number and the bank. Some countries also use a local code, such as the sort code in the UK, the ABA routing number in the US, the BSB in Australia and the IFSC in India. Some payment systems need no bank code, such as FAST and PayNow in Singapore, FPS in Hong Kong and Pix in Brazil.
What is the difference between an IBAN and a SWIFT/BIC code?
An IBAN identifies a specific account. A SWIFT/BIC code identifies the bank. International payments often need both.
Which countries use IBANs?
The SWIFT IBAN Registry has 89 countries. In this list of 217 countries and territories, 87 have their own IBAN and 3 use the IBAN of another country, such as the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, which use the UK's. The table on this page shows each one. A newer release of the registry may add a country, so if yours is not shown as an IBAN country, ask your bank.
Do I need an IBAN to receive money in Nigeria or the United States?
No. Neither is in the IBAN registry. A Nigerian account has a 10-digit NUBAN, and someone paying you from abroad usually needs your account number, your bank's name and its SWIFT/BIC code. A US account is identified by an account number and a 9-digit routing number.
Do I need a SWIFT/BIC code for a payment inside SEPA?
Usually not. You give the recipient's IBAN. The scheme rules say the beneficiary bank's BIC only has to be provided if the sending bank explicitly asks for it. A sender outside SEPA does need the BIC. 44 of the countries and territories in this list are in SEPA.
Why does my country show no verified local bank code?
We show a local bank code only for the 19 countries whose codes we have checked on our own pages, from the banks' and central banks' own documents. For other countries, ask your bank whether a local transfer needs a branch or clearing code as well as the account number. It does not mean that the country has none.
Why are some country names written differently?
The list follows World Bank style names, for example Turkiye, Korea, Rep., Egypt, Arab Rep. and Russian Federation. Look for the country under that name, and use the list in the table to check how it is written.
Is anything I choose stored or sent?
No. The page runs in your browser on data that is inside the page. Nothing you choose is stored or sent.
How current is this page?
The IBAN data is the SWIFT IBAN Registry release 101 as published in open-source libraries, and the SEPA data is the European Payments Council's list version 8.0, issued 24 December 2025. Banks change their rules and countries join SEPA, so confirm the details with your bank. We last checked on 20 September 2026.
